DOONSIDE. Venture into this park's natural bushland setting, where you'll find Australia's largest private area of native animals. It's also one of the few places where visitors are allowed to pet and feed kangaroos, emus, and koalas. You can plan to have lunch at the cafe, or bring your own picnic. TRAIN: to Blacktown and then bus 725 from the station (approx 45 minutes from CBD).

MOSMAN. Open since 1916, this zoological garden contains over 4000 animals. Check out rare Sumatran tigers, or have your picture taken with a koala while enjoying spectacular views of Sydney Harbour. Plus, a rainforest aviary provides glimpses of tropical birds from Northern Australia and Papua New Guinea. Wheelchairs and strollers can be rented too. Be sure to find out the schedule of talks and tours throughout the day, which don't need to be pre-booked. FERRY: to Taronga Zoo, leaves from Wharf 2 at Circular Quay about 4-5 times an hour, 12 minute trip. BUS: 247 to Taronga Zoo, longer than the ferry.
